Winery Pages

OBJECTIVE

It is my sincere hope that the information in these pages will develop into the story of the founding of a family owned and operated farm/vineyard/winery. At the very least it will contain the details of our collective thoughts, research and experience in the pursuit of this endeavor.

PART I: The Hands-On

This section shall be the ongoing chronicle of our actual experiences.

December 4, 2004 - Trip to Millbrook Vineyard & Winery
December 4, 2004 - Fly-by of Clinton Vineyards

December 11, 2004 - Name Search must go on - Found the NY Labeled Grape Wines List in pdf format (need to post link here). Bad News...Standing Stone Vineyards exists already in Hector, NY. Hollow Hill is still an option.

December 24, 2004 - Marion was standing in the living room talking about some polar bear cocktail shakers with Alex when the subject of non-stemmed barware came up. This is where she uttered the fateful words "Bottom of hte Bottle...wouldn't that be a cool name for a company!" Which, of course, it is. Research will commence.

PART II: Starting A Vineyard

Some research into the process involved.

Considerations in Starting a Vineyard - Tranquility Vineyards LLC - A short and simple list of some things to keep in mind.
Starting a grape vineyard - The Wine Rack Shop - Not so informative, but another list like the one from Tranquility (cf. above).
Start A Vineyard/Winery - The Arizona Wine Growers Association - A ten-step program that covers the process from beginning to end. This is a pretty good resource and how-to document.
Starting a Commercial Winery - CNN - An article from 2001 by CNN.
The Economics of Replanting Generic Wine Varieties in New York - Gerald B. White, Barry Shaffer, Robert M. Pool and Alejandro Lalor - Cornell Univeristy, Department of Agricultural, Resource and Managerial Economics, Publication E.B. 97-05

PART III: The Grapes

Herein lie some interesting sources of grapevine-related information. As this is other people's information as I have been able to find it, you could almost say I heard it through the -- well you get the picture.

Cornell Grape Pages - Cornell University - The definitive source for information regarding viticulture. These folks are responsible for the overwhelming majority of the science of grapes in the USA. The fact that they recently introduced a new species of grape to the world should say something. The are also located in NY state, and through the Cornell Co-operative Extension provide support to farms in the area.
Grape Growing Information - Maryland Grape Growers Association - A good source of general grape tending info. Guides to grapes, technical information on care and maintenence, pests, equipment, groups, marketing and other goodies.
The Winegrape Glossary - The Wine Lover's Page - An indexed list of winegrapes. Execllent for cross-referencing grape names. The grapes are listed by name with descriptions of where they are grown and what they are used to produce, and linked to other names for the same grape.
Grape Information and Links - Michigan State University - MSU's Horticulture Department page for grape-related links.

PART IV: Local Producers and sources

Other people involved in the market locally. Not necessarily vineyards (though some are), but also retailers and interest groups, clubs and the like.

Vintage New York - A retail operation that deals exclusively in goods produced in the state of New York.
New York Wine Cork - Margot and Richard Cirino - A wine store that specializes in New York State wines. They list recipes, news, events and have a list of vineyards and wineries!
Uncork New York! - Information on wine regions and wineries in New York.
Whitecliff Vineyard - A winery located in Gardiner, NY (near New Paltz).
New York State Wine Time - Another NYS-centric wine portal.

PART V: Legal Concerns

The Law of it all.

The New York State Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) State Liquor Authority. - This is the official site for the State of New York.
New York State Liquor Authority FAQ - The Frequently Asked Questions page of the New York State Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) State Liquor Authority.
Current US Wine Shipping Laws: New York - About.com - The about.com wine pages are pretty decent. This one details the state laws concerning delivery by means other than direct-sale on premesis.
WineLaw - The Wine Institute - This used to be WineLaw.org, but it was absorbed by the Wine Institute. They have Federal and State laws, regulations and other legal resources for winemakers.

PART VI: Other Resources

Wine Evaluation Chart (PDF) - The American Wine Society - This is a three page PDF file that includes a tasting score sheet and charts to help standardize wine competition judging. I just like the way the charts show the relationships between tastes.
Enology Resources - Author Unpublished - A bunch of annotated links.
The Wine Institute - California - Provides Information about winemaking. Harvest reports, news and --oh...yeah-- the Legal Library known as WineLaw (cf. above), which is a beautiful setup.
The American Wine Society - The AWS is a national noprofit consumer organization.
Wine Tasting Terms - Strat's Place - This is kinda silly, but it is a glossary of words used in describing wines. I list it only because the first word on the list is "abgang"

ABGANG (see also AFTERTASTE).
Term used by Austrian winetasters. Expresses the total sensation following swallowing, not only in the palate and throat but also stomach etc.
How cool is that?!
winemaker's Warehouse - Waukesha, WI - A supplier and good source of information.
The Weekend Brewer - Chester, VA - A home-brewer's supply store in Virginia. They have lots of information on brewing/winemaking.
Port Wine FAQ - Dave Thompson - This is fairly informative paper on Port wine. Making through enjoying. Includes a list of Port Houses and vintage years.
Brew-winemaking.com - Minneapolis, MN - An online homebrew supplier. They have American and French Oak barrels.
Assorted Recipes For Homemade Wines - The Household Cyclopedia of General Information - Provided by publicbookshelf.com, this is an interesting bit of Americana. The Recipes appear to be workable.
Winemaker Magazine - Manchester Center, VT - A magazine devoted to winemaking. Available online.
